Michael E. White BiograPhy

Michael E. White currently holds the position of Principal Director for Hypersonics (PD, H) in the Office of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering (Modernization) within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E). In this role, Mr. White is responsible for leading the nation’s vision and strategy for developing offensive and defensive warfighting capability enabled by hypersonic systems.

This includes establishing a roadmap for the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop transformative warfighting capabilities through hypersonic systems in the areas of air, land, and sea-based hypersonic strike capabilities, as well as systems needed for the comprehensive layered defeat of adversary hypersonic capability.

Additionally, he oversees future projects related to reusable hypersonic systems. The portfolio under his responsibility exceeds $3 billion annually, spanning across various entities, including the Services, OSD, MDA, DARPA, and SCO. SDA also plays a crucial role in developing space capabilities as an enabler.

Before assuming his current position, Mr. White served as the Head of the Air and Missile Defense Sector at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. During his tenure, he led a team of over 1,100 staff members dedicated to developing advanced concepts aimed at enhancing the nation’s air and missile defense capability.

Prior to this, from 2005 to 2016, he held the position of APL Mission Area Executive for Air and Missile Defense, overseeing a program portfolio that included projects such as AEGIS, STANDARD Missile, Ship Self Defense System, Cooperative Engagement Capability, Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program, Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense, and several other Navy and Missile Defense Agency programs.

Mr. White earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland.
