Major General Matthew V. Baker Biography

The 88th Readiness Division is commanded by Major General Matthew V. Baker and has bases in Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. He took over on July 30, 2022. He had previously served as the 416th Theater Engineer Command’s commander in Darien, Illinois.

Major General Baker has also held positions as the Chief of Staff of the 416th TEC, Deputy Commanding General-Support of the 102nd Training Division, Commander of the 1st Bde (EN), 102nd Div (MS), Deputy Commander of the 372nd Engineer Brigade at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and Battalion Commander for the 389th Engineer Battalion in Dubuque, Iowa. At the 416th Theater Engineer Command in Darien, Illinois, Major General Baker previously held the positions of Assistant Information Officer, Information Officer, Information Management Officer, and Chief of the Emergency Operations Center.

In the United States Army Reserve, Major General Baker held several command and staff roles, including those of Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Commander of the 233rd Engineer Company in Marseilles, Illinois. In addition, Major General Baker held the positions of Task Force Engineer, Task Force Mountain in Bagram, Afghanistan, Liaison Officer for the 404th Rear Operations Center in Machesney Park, Illinois, Intelligence Officer for the 244th Army Liaison Team in Machesney Park, Illinois, and Observer Controller Trainer with the 85th Training Division in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Major General Baker supported Major General Heine, the Director of Operations, Iraq Reconstruction Management Office for Multi-National Force Iraq, in Baghdad, Iraq, as his aide-de-camp, executive officer, and PSO.

The United States Army War College, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, the Illinois Military Academy, the Officer Candidate School, the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Course, the United States Army Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the United States Army Command and Services Staff School, and the United States Army Combined Arms and Services Staff School are all institutions Major General Baker has completed. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science and from the United States Army War College with a Master of Strategic Studies.
