John Kreul Biography

John Kreul currently holds the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (OUSDP) and is in charge of overseeing the Policy Management and Operations (PMO) division.

Mr. Kreul is an experienced civilian professional with more than two decades of service in OUSDP, the National Security Council staff, and the Department of State. Prior to his current position as COO, Mr. Kreul fulfilled the role of Principal Director for Homeland Defense Integration and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (HDI&DSCA) from August 2021 to August 2023.

He also served as Principal Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs between 2014 and 2021, during which he acted as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for both areas.

Throughout his tenure in the Policy sector, he undertook responsibilities such as chief of staff and senior advisor for regional strategy and plans in the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs’ office, leadership of the Under Secretary’s Human Capital Strategy Team, oversight of the Coalition Affairs office, directorial roles in the Afghanistan and Strategy, Policy Planning, and Iranian Affairs offices.

Mr. Kreul also played a key role in the National Security Council’s defense policy and strategy directorate from 2009 to 2011 and underwent training at the National Defense University’s Industrial College of the Armed Forces between 2007 and 2008.

Before entering the Department of Defense, Mr. Kreul was employed by the Nonproliferation Bureau of the Department of State. During his tenure at the State Department, he was seconded to the U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels in 2001 and later to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad in 2003.

In addition to his government service, Mr. Kreul’s career included positions at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Association of the U.S. Army. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and earned his master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
