Episode 3 of Heartstopper Season 2 opens with Tao, Charlie, and Isaac brainstorming ideas on how to plan the perfect date for Elle. Isaac expresses concern that Tao might be overthinking things, but Tao argues that the fate of their friendship hinges on the success of the date. Transitioning from friends to lovers can be nerve-wracking, and Tao’s anxiety is understandable.
Meanwhile, a few of Charlie’s rugby friends attempt to reconnect with him. They apologize for not standing up for him against Harry. Nick accepts their apology but finds it difficult when they refer to him and Charlie as merely good friends.
Nick confides in Charlie about wanting to tell some of his rugby buddies about their relationship but feeling unsure about where to begin. Charlie, as always, provides unwavering support and encourages Nick to do what feels comfortable for him. The two share a tender moment, which is interrupted when Coach Singh catches them kissing and summons Nick to her office.
Coach Singh empathizes with Nick’s situation, drawing from her own experiences with her wife. She offers her support and understands that this might be the reason Nick has been distant from his teammates. Nick clarifies that the other boys are still unaware of their relationship, and Coach Singh advises him not to engage in public displays of affection during team practice.
On another note, Charlie still needs to finish his History coursework but chooses to help Nick study for his Chemistry exam instead. He lies to Nick about completing his essay.
Meanwhile, Isaac and James bond at the library while Tao delves deeper into researching first-date planning. Feeling determined, Tao decides to get a new haircut and arrives at school later, looking sharp with flowers in hand.
Nick’s exam goes well this time, and Charlie rushes to finish his essay on time. Afterward, they rejoice in being free to spend time together now that the exams are over. However, Mr. Farouk asks those signed up for the Paris trip to stay back and meet with students from Higgs Girls School. Everyone is excited about the possibilities the Paris trip holds. But Tara is feeling down because Darcy didn’t reciprocate her love confession.
Later, Tao musters the courage to ask Elle out on a date and admits his romantic feelings for her. Elle confesses that she feels the same way and agrees to go on the date. However, the movie date turns out to be quite awkward, as Tao tries too hard to cater to Elle’s preferences, making her worried that he’s not enjoying himself and changing who he is to please her.
Elsewhere, the kids attend Harry’s party to celebrate the end of exams. Charlie notices that Nick looks unwell, but Nick insists he’s fine. They end up getting separated at the party and spend most of their time searching for each other. Tori asks Nick to promise to find and take care of Charlie. Nick also struggles throughout the night to find the right moment to come out to his rugby friends, but the timing never seems right.
Tara also misses Darcy, who doesn’t show up at the party. She wonders if her love confession scared Darcy away but is too afraid to ask. After their movie date, Tao and Elle arrive at the party and get into a fight when Tao becomes jealous that Elle invited Naomi and Felix. Charlie tries to comfort Tao, while Naomi and Felix lend a listening ear to Elle.
When Nick and Charlie finally reunite, Nick’s condition has worsened, and they decide to head home. Nick worries that he’s let Charlie down, but Charlie reassures him that it’s okay and emphasizes that Nick doesn’t have to come out until he’s ready. They agree to go to Paris as secret boyfriends. Charlie admits he wants to share their relationship with others, but he’s willing to wait. As Charlie shares his feelings, Nick falls asleep peacefully.
The Episode Review
Charlie’s clarity about Nick’s right to keep his sexuality private and not feel obligated to come out until he’s ready is truly refreshing. Their effective communication sets a great example, and it’s a message that many people should embrace. Discovering and accepting one’s sexual orientation takes time, and there’s no fixed timeline for coming out.
It’s heartening to observe Nick’s efforts in understanding and respecting Charlie’s feelings during this process. Hopefully, as they continue to support each other, Nick will eventually feel comfortable coming out, and they can openly date.
Regarding Tao and Elle, their current challenge is likely just a minor hurdle that they can overcome. More open communication is key for them, as it is for Tara and Darcy. It seems like a new couple might be forming between James and Isaac. Do you think they have mutual feelings for each other?
Heartstopper Season 2 Episode 3 is a heartwarming and relatable exploration of young love and friendship. The episode features some beautiful moments between Nick and Charlie, as well as Tao and Elle.
It’s also great to see Tara and Darcy finally interacting again, and I’m excited to see how their relationship develops in future episodes. Overall, Episode 3 is another great addition to Heartstopper, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
