General James E. Rainey Biography
Since October 4, 2022, career Army officer General James E. Rainey has served as the commanding general of the U.S. Army Futures Command. From June 2021 to October 2022, he worked as the G-3/5/7 Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans, and Training.
Before that, he held the positions of Commandant of the United States Army Command and General Staff College, commanding general of Fort Leavenworth, and commanding general of the United States Army Combined Arms Center.
His main duties are training for the Army, military education, and leader development. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1987 and was commissioned as an infantry officer. He has served continuously for more than 35 years, including tours in Korea, Germany, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
He has held positions of leadership at every level, from company to division, most recently serving as the 3rd Infantry Division’s commanding general at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
He received his master’s degrees in public administration from Troy University and advanced military arts and sciences from the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They have two kids and a grandson between them and have been married for 34 years.
