Doug Beck Biography
Mr. Doug Beck currently holds the position of Director at the Defense Innovation Unit. In this capacity, he is responsible for overseeing efforts to expedite the integration of commercial technology into the military.
Additionally, he serves as a senior advisor on technology innovation, competition, and strategic impact to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense. He played a pivotal role in establishing and leading the joint reserve component of DIU from its inception in 2015 until 2019.
Before joining DIU, Mr. Beck served as a Vice President at Apple, reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook. From 2009 to 2023, he co-led global business development and sales functions at Apple. He also managed business operations in Northeast Asia and the Americas. In his most recent role, he led various purpose-driven initiatives at Apple, focusing on areas like health, education, and public impact institutions.
Mr. Beck’s professional history also includes the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Charles Schwab Corporation. Prior to his time at Schwab, he held a position as a partner at McKinsey & Company.
He co-led McKinsey’s global strategy practice and was involved in other industry and functional practices in both the United States and Asia. Notably, he became one of the youngest partners in McKinsey’s history in 2000.
Alongside his civilian career, Mr. Beck is a Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2006 to 2007 as part of a joint special operations task force.
Over his nearly 26 years of service, he has had extensive assignments throughout the Asia Pacific region. Notably, he commanded a significant joint reserve unit that supported the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. His military awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal (awarded twice), the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Educationally, Mr. Beck earned a bachelor’s degree with the highest honors from Yale University. He also holds an M.Phil in International Relations from Oxford University, where he was recognized as a Rhodes Scholar.
